Upcoming January 5 Trinity/WISDOM Injunction Hearing

On January 5, 2016, the court hearing for the continuation of the Trinity/WISDOM Homeschooling injunction will occur.

The following is a short explanation of what this means and what will happen during this court proceeding.

On October 25, 2016, the Ministry of Education removed the accreditation from Trinity Christian School, thus effectively closing WISDOM Homeschooling.

Trinity/WISDOM launched court proceedings in opposition to this closure and was successful on November 4, 2016 in getting an interim injunction to that Trinity/WISDOM could continue to operate albeit without funding.

A further hearing was set for January 5th, 2017 to determine if the injunction should be continued and funding restored (which would happen if the conditions are met to have Trinity/WISDOM to remain open pending a judicial review).

Please pray for all involved in these court proceedings.

Discernment, truth and clarity are very important, especially at this time.

AHEA will provide an update once the court has made a ruling on the injunction.

Christmas Greetings from AHEA - 2017

As home educators look forward to Christmas and beyond to a new year, some of the challenges we have experienced in 2016 encourage us to lean even more on Christ Jesus, the reason for our hope.

When reflecting on the past year, there have been events that have caused fear and hardship.

AHEA continues to work to stem the tide of such recent events.

Yet, while we focus on these concerns, it is good to remember the divine at this time when Christians the world over celebrate the birth of the Saviour.

As we consider that God came to earth as an infant, we should contemplate what is truly important in our lives: our own infants, our children of all ages, our families, our faith.

As we think of how the holy infant grew to become a man who would die on a cross, parents today realize that we are not raising children so much as raising the adults they will become.

We chose home education because we wanted to give our children the best and the fullest education: the finest academics, crucial life skills, a strong foundation in good character and faith, and a strong family.

Regardless of what the new year brings, home educators will continue to provide that to their children.

At the same time, we should remember not to hold home educating closer than God.

What we hope for from God is much smaller than what He has planned to give us. We ask for grains of sand, and He desires to bless with beaches.

Over the holidays, please send good tidings to our elected officials: MLAs, the Education Minister, the Premier.

Christmas cards of goodwill, prayers, and seasonal messages of love, hope, peace and joy are encouraged.

Those messages of peace and joy also go out to all of you from all of the volunteers of the Alberta Home Education Association: have a happy and holy Christmas.

June and Summer 2016 AHEA Update

On May 29, 2016, the Deputy Minister of Education announced that effective August 31, 2016, the only funding that will be made available to parents for school completed at home will be under the Home Education Regulation. This is not a result of any legislative change, but is a reflection of the legal situation which has always existed in Alberta.

Alberta Education has indicated that it will take school authorities time to determine new policies and procedures. If you have been teaching your children at home in a totally or partially school directed program, the policy around reimbursing parents for resources may be changing. Parents making plans for the 2016/17 school year should be aware of changes and possible implications.
For more information and to read the latest AHEA EAlert, please go to the below link:

"The Minister of Education has announced, in the last few weeks, that the 2012 Education Act (passed by the legislature but not yet proclaimed) and the Regulations that fall under it, will need further review. The Minister also announced that his ministry would be undertaking a thorough curriculum review of the Alberta Program of Studies.
AHEA will be part of both of these reviews and, as always, will advocate strongly for home educators and for parental rights and freedoms."

"Recently, there was an unprovoked and baseless attack on the reputation of AHEA and on the individuals on the board. As we have made clear repeatedly, AHEA has not and will not compromise the rights and freedoms of Alberta home educators and parents. A handful of parents contacted AHEA to ask questions based on the misinformation and errors they had been told and we clarified things for them. As always, if you need information on anything regarding home education in Alberta, please contact us using our Contact page."
