Home Matters 2020 Summer Publication Released!

Home Matters 2020 Summer Issue

THIS IS IMPORTANT…

Your summer issue of AHEA Home Matters is now available – online only, for members only! Due to adjustments resulting from the covid situation, this will be the norm for the foreseeable future. It is still the same great magazine with all our government updates and articles that keep you informed about what is happening in Alberta on the homeschooling front. Plus, there are other great articles geared to encourage you as you continue on in the adventure of homeschooling your own children. Hear from our President, our Government Liaison, and our Editor; as they share from their hearts about their own experiences. Read about others and their insights as they seek God's best for them and their families. Hear how AHEA is striving and advocating for you in our ever shifting relativistic society.
WE ARE HERE FOR YOU!

How to Access: You can access the Home Matters 2020 Summer issue by logging into our website as a member, and navigating to 'Home Matters Access' under the 'Membership' tab.

TO HELP US HELP YOU…

Like everyone else, the covid situation has hit our organization too. With the loss of the convention and the subsequent revenues that this generates it will be critical that we have your support as we go forward. We are already planning for our 2021 Convention, but would like to encourage you to renew your membership as soon as possible. Many renew theirs at the Convention and so this loss is also felt. Unless you have already renewed yours, your present membership expires September 30th. To vote at next year's AGM, you will need to renew before December 31, 2020. I recommend that you renew sooner, as opposed to later, so that you can continue to access our online 'Home Matters Magazine' and receive other updates that are sent out exclusively to our members.

PLEASE STAND WITH US AS WE STAND FOR YOU!

Please Support YOUR Non-Profit!

Please Support YOUR Non-Profit!

Dear AHEA Supporter,

Today, May 5th, has been designated a special day by some, where people can show their support in their local communities, food banks, churches, non-profits, and businesses, who will be suffering due to the effects of Covid-19 on our lives.

AHEA is a non-profit organization and would love to have your support! 2020 is sure to be a challenging year for us as we have faced the loss of our annual convention, which has been a yearly event for over 35 years. Losing this will affect our ability to function over the next year, and we will be relying on donations as never before.

The work of your AHEA volunteer Board in defending and promoting home education interests to government and educating the public is a year-round job, and we work hard for you throughout. We depend on a small group of contractors to provide services that are irreplaceable, as well as the costs involved in running a society.

Would you please consider making a donation at https://www.aheaonline.com/donate? We exist to serve the needs of our members and the home education community, and cannot do it without your support. However, we know that this situation has left many with the loss of income, and other uncertainties, and only wish you to do what you can, if you can. Thank you, in advance, for considering AHEA in your giving this year.

AHEA Convention Update regarding COVID-19

In light of the March 12, 2020 recommendations made by the Chief Medical Officer of Health for the Government of Alberta, AHEA has no choice but to follow caution and cancel our March 26-28, 2020 Convention at the Westerner in Red Deer, Alberta. We applaud the willingness of so many to encourage the Convention's continuation, but we care deeply about the well-being of our attendees and are following Provincial guidelines in order to make their safety our first priority. We are currently considering options to provide value to those who have already purchased admission to our Convention and will update everyone within the coming days. Those involved with putting on the Convention will be contacted directly by a Convention team member.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we all navigate this unexpected and unfortunate situation.

Choice in Education Survey - AHEA Encourages Your Response by Dec. 6th

Choice in Education Survey

Hello Alberta home educators. You have until Friday, December 6, 2019 to fill out this Choice in Education engagement survey. The AHEA board has come up with some ideas on how you may wish to answer some of these questions with the idea to promote the home education approach to learning and lifestyle. Feel free to consider the below ideas in your answers, trying where possible to put things in your own words. Hopefully many of our ideas strike a chord with your thoughts and sentiments concerning home education. As well, please let us know of benefits of home education that you submitted in your survey that we might have missed. You can email us at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

You can find the survey here, (https://www.alberta.ca/choice-in-education-engagement.aspx) where you can either fill out the survey electronically (with the ability to partially fill it out, save it, and finalize it later) or use the PDF version that you can print out.

Regards,

The AHEA Board

What does choice in education mean to you?

With respect to the right to home education, this includes not merely a right over the place in which education occurs, but a right to determine the very content, process and timing of this education.

Christian schools and other schools of faith, should also be able to choose curriculum that is consistent with their faith perspective and the values of the parents who choose to send their children there.

What are the reasons that you/your child chose this school(s)/program(s)? (Please write in the box below)

  • The ability to instill my family's values (religious, worldview) in my children.
  • Because I believe that God has given me, as the parent, the responsibility to teach my children.
  • To personally lead my children in fine academic achievement.
  • To personally lead my children in contentment in life.
  • To personally lead my children in being active citizens.
  • To take the lead in producing children who are sociable, not just with their peers, but with people of all ages, and in various situations and settings.
  • To spend a significant amount of time with my children whom I love being with.
  • The ability to tailor the curriculum, the delivery of the curriculum, and the pace of learning to match what is best for my children, including those with special needs.
  • To achieve flexibility in education in terms of the timing of educating my children, as well as the location.
  • For my children to benefit from practical, life integrated education in the context of family and community.

Are you satisfied with the current amount of choice in education in Alberta?

I would like to continue to see all of these education options to be available in addition to public education:

  • Separate
  • Private
  • Home Education

What, if anything, do you see as currently working well or needing improvement in terms of choice in Alberta's education system?

When answering this keep in mind the freedom to have some education options that give you not merely the right over the place in which education occurs, but a right to determine the very content, process and timing of this education and assessment possibilities.

It is working well that standardized testing is not compulsory for home educated students, as parents are taking the responsibility for the education of their children, and home educated students follow individualized programming.

Areas for improvement may include greater recognition of parental authority in the education of their children.

What would you like to see in the future in terms of choice in Alberta's education system?

  • To continue to have the following educational options available in addition to public education:
    • Separate
    • Private
    • Home Education
  • To see the introduction of a "notification only" option for home education for which I would be willing to forsake funding and not be required to meet twice annually with a facilitator.

An update to all education acts and education regulations to clearly recognize parents as the authority over their children's education. This includes recognizing that it is the parents' responsibility to determine what is in the best interest of their children.
