As of 4:30 pm on Thursday March 22 2012, the proposed Education Act (Bill 2) has not passed.

At the session of the Committee of the Whole today, the Minister of Education introduced five last minute amendments, none of which affect home education.

After debate from 3pm to 4:30pm, the Legislature adjourned until April 2nd. With tomorrow and then next week slated as Constituency Weeks – where MLAs spend time in their ridings and the Legislature does not sit – Bill 2 remains on hold.

It has also been rumoured that a provincial election will soon be called, and Premier Redford today refused to rule that out.

So, as of this writing, the Legislature could return on April 2nd and then pass Bill 2. It is also possible that an election will be called before that date and then Bill 2 will not have passed. So nothing has been decided, yet.

At this time, AHEA would recommend two things to our members…

1. Continue to call and email the Premier, the Education Minister, and your MLA.  Respectully request - 6 words out.  "and the Alberta Human Rights Act."
If long distance, call 310-0000 and then enter the area code and number you wish:

2. And, as always, AHEA asks all of our members to pray for our political leaders, their discernment on this very important issue, and their courage to do what is right.
