Regulation Update

Regulation Update

After what seems like years of work, because it has been years of work, the new regulation has been signed and released.  Many of you will have received a letter from the Minister of Education about the new regulation which is available on-line at www.education.gov.ab.ca/HomeEducation.

AHEA is pleased that the regulation respects parental choice and control of their children's education with minimal oversight from boards and registering authorities.  Many of the issues we were most concerned about have been favourably resolved, including the Provincial Achievement Test and the other evaluation processes.

Writing the PATs is clearly defined as an option in the new regulation.  Parents may choose or refuse to have their children write these curriculum based exams.  This respects parental freedom to select curriculum and areas of study.

Further evaluation of student achievement will be part of the facilitation process, but these comments will not be passed on to Alberta Education.  The purpose of these comments will be to ease transitions into the public school system in cases where parents choose to stop home educating.

AHEA would like to thank those who took part in the regulation process, particularly Paul Jeffery, Paul Faris, Shawna Lepp, Wendy Sauve, Kenneth Noster, Raymond Strom and Colleen Lowther, and all those parents who contacted their MLA's.  We believe that our combined efforts have influenced the outcome of this process.
