Information: Even though I went through the public school system, my parents worked hard to pass on a lifelong love for learning to me, for which I am so grateful. As a high school teacher in a private school, I was very disturbed by the fact that my students were not intrinsically motivated to learn. When I shared something interesting with them, their first question was, “Will this be on the exam?” Seeing how the school system produced extrinsically motivated students, I was determined never to put my children into that system. I am thankful to have the freedom to traditionally home educate our children; we study to learn, not to pass exams or earn credentials.

The best part of home education is that we are able to enjoy every part of life with our children, teaching them to love the Lord their God with all their heart and with all their soul and with all their strength. This is our highest calling. To do so is becoming more and more uncommon in a society which teaches children that they are a result of random processes.

I hope that AHEA can encourage all parents through the convention and magazine, regardless of the route they are choosing for their children. As government programs become more and more popular in Alberta, AHEA needs to stand on guard for traditional, parent-directed home education to ensure that government programs are not imposed on all home educators. It is my hope and prayer that we will continue to diligently guard this freedom for the generations who will follow.
