ACTION ALERT
Dear HSLDA members and friends,
For those of you living in Alberta, we need urgent action on your part to keep the gains we have made over the last two years.
For those living outside Alberta, we may need your assistance in the future with this issue so are sending this alert to all our members.
Background
Over the last 2 years the Alberta Government has been reviewing the home education regulation and we have been very involved in this process. This past fall we met with the Honourable Lyle Oberg, Minister of Education at that time, and he agreed to make many changes favourable to us. This changed the proposed regulation from decreasing homeschool freedoms to improving homeschool freedoms.
Update
This victory is now in jeopardy. The fall election in Alberta saw Dr. Oberg re-elected but he was made Minister of Transportation and the Honourable Gene Zwozesky was made Minister of Education. There wasn’t enough time before the election to have the home education regulation passed by the government so it is still in final draft format.
Mr. Zwozdesy apparently has concerns with the regulation and wants to make changes.
We need to stop this and we need all Alberta homeschoolers to act now.
Action
Call the Honourable Gene Zwozdesy’s office to let him know:
- that you are a homeschooler in Alberta,
- that homeschoolers across Alberta worked hard to make their voices heard throughout the home education regulation review process,
- that you are deeply disappointed that he is ignoring the voice of homeschoolers and considering redrafting the regulation, and
- that you want him to pass the regulation as drafted by Dr. Oberg.
Other points to consider mentioning:
- If the homeschool regulation is an important issue for you in future elections don’t hesitate to mention this.
- This is just one more example of how the conservative party is losing touch with their roots and ignoring the voice of the people (Conservatives in Alberta are concerned about being viewed this way).
The more calls received by Zwozdesky’s office the better chance we have to stop this. Your call is important and will be counted even if you only leave a message.
Don’t let this opportunity pass by!
